Mindanao State University–General Santos successfully concluded its Balik Scientist Program engagement with an Exit Conference on July 15 at Greenleaf Hotel, followed by the Presentation of Research, Academic, and Professional Experiences at Texas Tech University (TTU), USA on July 16.
The two-day engagement highlighted the accomplishments of the Balik Scientist Program, strengthened research collaboration between MSU–GenSan and Texas Tech University, and encouraged faculty members and researchers to pursue impactful, globally relevant scientific research.
During the Exit Conference, Balik Scientist Dr. Benildo G. de los Reyes presented the accomplishments of the program, while university officials and representatives from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) expressed their support and appreciation for the initiative.
In his message, University Chancellor Atty. Shidik T. Abantas, underscored the importance of advancing genomics research, emphasizing its crucial role in addressing emerging health challenges. He also emphasized that partnerships with agencies such as DOST-PCAARRD, the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) are vital in advancing scientific innovation and producing evidence-based solutions that benefit communities.
On the second day, participants attended presentations featuring research and academic experiences from Texas Tech University. Among the presenters were Dr. Philip Nicholas, Research Assistant Professor at TTU, and Paolo M. Tagaloguin, MS, a DOST iGREAT Scholar, PhD student in Plant Genetics, Breeding, and Biotechnology, and MSU–GenSan faculty member.
The presentations showcased advancements in plant genetics, biotechnology, and interdisciplinary research while providing faculty members with insights into international research practices and opportunities for collaboration.
In his closing remarks, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Mishell D. Lawas emphasized that the true responsibility of higher education institutions extends beyond preserving knowledge. “The true responsibility of a university is the knowledge to be shared, to be used by society… transformed into something impactful that can solve problems in society,” she said, encouraging researchers to continue generating knowledge that creates meaningful change.
The engagement concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation and reaffirmed MSU–GenSan’s commitment to expanding international research partnerships, fostering innovation, and producing research that addresses both local and global challenges.
