MSU-GenSan leads Women’s Month 2026 celebration during flag ceremony

“We are here. We are leading, like the Babaylans.” This powerful message echoed during the flag raising ceremony as Mindanao State University – General Santos continued its celebration of National Women’s Month 2026, led by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA) Domain and the College of Education on March 9, 2026.
In her message, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Mishell D. Lawas shared updates on the university’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen academic facilities. She highlighted that several upgraded learning spaces, including e-classrooms, e-laboratories, and the e-bulletin, have already been turned over, while retrofitting efforts for other academic buildings remain underway to further enhance learning environments for students and faculty.
Meanwhile, Gender and Development (GAD) Director Ruhama L. Gomez emphasized the significance of leading Like the Babaylans, highlighting the enduring leadership and influence of women both in history and in modern society.
“We are not actually introducing a new concept of leadership here. We are simply restoring something that is original,” Gomez said, referring to the Babaylans of pre-colonial Philippines who served as healers, mediators, and wisdom keepers in their communities.
She also encouraged members of the MSU-GenSan community to continue advocating for safe and inclusive spaces where voices can be heard and respected.
As part of the celebration, the university has lined up month-long activities, including Serbisyo para kay Juana, the Dugong MSUan bloodletting activity, and an all-gender tournament, among other programs promoting gender equality and community engagement.
Through these initiatives, MSU-GenSan reaffirms its commitment to fostering a campus that empowers women and champions leadership inspired by the strength and courage of the Babaylan spirit.
