About the OVCREI
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Extension, and Innovation (OVCREI), serves as the coordinating office that ensures the implementation and delivery of research, development, extension, and innovation undertakings and outputs of the University. Other activities of the OVCREI include establishing linkages with local, regional, national, and international institutions and support agencies/organizations for funding and/or collaborations.
The REI undertakings of the University are anchored on the following goals:
- Promote culture and excellence of REI in the University.
- Leverage collaborative partnerships to provide relevant solutions to address societal challenges.
- Support development of REI infrastructure and resources in the University.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of REI undertakings.
- Advance the visibility and impact of the University in REI at the local, national, and international levels.
By virtue of the BOR Resolution No. 421, S. 2023, the OVCREI currently consists of (1) the Research Division, (2) the Extension Services Division, and (3) the Innovation Division.
MSU-GenSan Research, Extension, and Innovation Thrusts
In pursuit of its Vision and Mission while upholding its core values, MSU-GenSan pursues the following research, extension, and innovation thrusts:
Community-Based Research, Extension, and Innovation
MSU-GenSan conducts REI activities that directly address the needs and challenges faced by communities in SOCCSKSARGEN and neighboring regions, collaborating with local government units, NGOs, and community-based organizations to identify priorities and develop solutions that improve the quality of life for Muslims and Indigenous Peoples.
Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development
Given the importance of agriculture in Southern Mindanao, MSU-GenSan prioritizes research and innovation in sustainable agricultural practices, crop diversification, soil health management, and post-harvest technologies, helping enhance food security, increase farmers’ incomes, and promote sustainable rural development.
Cultural Preservation and Heritage Studies
MSU-GenSan promotes research and extension activities focused on preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Muslims and Indigenous Peoples in the region, documenting traditional knowledge, promoting cultural tourism, and supporting community-based initiatives to safeguard cultural practices and traditions.
Education and Capacity Building
MSU-GenSan plays a key role in providing training and capacity-building programs to develop competent human resources in Southern Mindanao, offering relevant specialized courses and workshops tailored to the needs of local industries, government agencies, and community organizations.
Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship
MSU-GenSan facilitates transfer of technology from research laboratories to local industries and communities, establishing incubation centers, business development services, and technology parks to support entrepreneurship and innovation in the region.
Healthcare and Well-being
MSU-GenSan prioritizes REI activities aimed at improving healthcare access and promoting well-being among underserved populations, including Muslims and Indigenous Peoples, conducting studies on prevalent health issues, developing community health programs, and training healthcare professionals.
Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Adaptation
MSU-GenSan engages in research and extension initiatives focused on environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and climate change adaptation, studying local ecosystems, implementing conservation strategies, and raising awareness about environmental issues among local communities.
ICT and Digital Innovation
MSU-GenSan promotes research and innovation in information and communication technology (ICT) to address socio-economic challenges and enhance connectivity in the region, developing digital solutions for agriculture, education, healthcare, and governance, as well as promoting digital literacy among marginalized communities.
Student and Alumni Affairs
MSU-GenSan recognizes the importance of engaging students and alumni in fostering the culture of service, innovation, and lifelong learning, empowering current its students and graduates to become active contributors to sustainable development in Southern Mindanao and beyond.
Peace and Conflict Studies
MSU-GenSan, as a Peace university, through its dedication to research, extension, and innovation, aims to address the root causes of conflict, foster dialogue, and understanding among divers communities, and contribute to the creation of a more peaceful and harmonious society.
Research, Extension, and Innovation Planning Committee
The Research, Extension, and Innovation Planning Committee (REIPC) serves as an advisory body to the Chancellor, composed of:
- Chairperson : Chancellor
- Co-Chairperson : Vice-Chancellor for Research, Extension, and Innovation
- Vice Chairpersons : Director for Research, Director for Extension Services, and Director for Innovation
- Members : Special Assistants, Deans, Campus Secretary, Research and Extension Coordinators, Faculty Union President, and SSC President.
Specifically, the REIPC performs the following functions:
- Serve as a consultative body providing guidance on research, extension, and innovation priorities, strategies, and policies
- Oversee the strategic planning and coordination of research, extension, and innovation programs to align with the University’s goals and national development priorities
- Facilitate discussions, deliberations, and recommendations on proposals, policies, and initiatives requiring approval or endorsement by University administrators and/or actions by the BOR
The REIPC convenes quarterly to fulfill the abovementioned functions and to consistently enhance and streamline processes.
