The Mindanao State University–General Santos community formally launched the celebration of Buwan ng Panitikan 2026 during its weekly flag ceremony, led by the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Office of Lifelong Learning on April 6, 2026.
With this year’s theme, “Bekët Panitikan para sa Katwiran at Kalikasan,” the university underscores the vital role of literature in promoting critical thinking, cultural awareness, and environmental consciousness among Filipinos.
In his message, Chancellor Atty. Shidik T. Abantas acknowledged current global and economic challenges while emphasizing the importance of unity and hope. “Despite all that is happening in the world, especially in geopolitics, we still pray for world peace… and we hope that this crisis will end”, he said.
Chancellor also highlighted concerns on rising fuel costs and their anticipated impact on basic commodities, reminding the community to remain aware and prepared in the coming weeks. Alongside these realities, he shared key institutional developments approved during the recent Board of Regents meeting, including the establishment of the MSU-General Santos Center for Agribusiness Research, Enterprise and Extension, and the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office, reinforcing the university’s commitment to innovation and its agribusiness mandate.
Meanwhile, Dr. Debbie M. Cruspero, Director of the Center for Languages and Cultures, delivered the message of celebration, emphasizing the significance of literature in preserving history and shaping national identity. “Panitikan… reflects the history and cultural heritage of the country and must be recognized by future generations”, she said.
She further explained that literature serves as a bridge between the past and present, allowing Filipinos to understand their roots while inspiring collective action toward a more just and sustainable future. Anchored on the national theme set by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), this year’s celebration calls for the use of literature as a tool for unity, reason, and environmental stewardship.
The month-long celebration will feature various activities spearheaded by the Department of Filipino, in collaboration with campus organizations, aimed at encouraging students and the academic community to read, write, and engage with Philippine literature.
Through this initiative, MSU-General Santos continues to uphold its commitment to cultural preservation, intellectual growth, and nation-building.
